Fundamentals

What is an asset, exactly?

Anything that has potential or actual value to an organisation. That includes a bridge and a pump, but also a licence, a dataset or a trained workforce. The definition is deliberately broad, because the discipline is about value, not about equipment.

Is asset management the same as maintenance?

No. Maintenance keeps an asset functioning. Asset management decides whether it should still exist, be renewed, repurposed or disposed of, and maintenance is one of the levers it uses.

What does ISO 55001 actually require?

That you can answer, for any asset, what it costs across its life, what risk it carries and what performance it returns; that you have written who arbitrates between the three and on what criteria; and that you can produce the evidence.

What is a SAMP?

The strategic asset management plan: the document that turns organisational objectives into asset management objectives. The 2024 edition gave it its own sub-clause, which is a way of saying that too many organisations had it only on paper.

Certification

Can an individual be certified to ISO 55001?

No. ISO 55001 certifies an organisation’s management system. Individuals hold training credentials, such as MARAMM’s Lead Implementer and Internal Auditor certification, or professional certifications such as the CMRP, awarded by the SMRP.

My organisation is certified to ISO 55001:2014. What happens now?

All 2014 certifications expire or are withdrawn by 31 July 2027. Since 31 July 2026, certification bodies no longer conduct initial or recertification audits against the 2014 edition. The exact application depends on your accreditation body and certifier.

How long does certification take?

There is no honest single answer. It depends on the maturity of what already exists, the scope you certify, and the availability of evidence. An organisation with an inventory it trusts moves far faster than one that must first build it.

ISO 55001 or ISO 41001 first?

They answer different questions and do not compete. If your priority is the value of assets across their life cycle, start with 55001. If it is the services and the working environment, start with 41001.

In practice

We do not have a reliable asset inventory. Where do we start?

There. A renewal rate calculated on an inventory whose ages are unknown is a decorative figure. Data quality is not a prerequisite you can defer, it is the first deliverable.

How do you justify deferring maintenance?

You do not defer it, you borrow against it. Deferral moves a cost forward in time and usually increases it. The defensible version of the decision states the future cost, the preventive cost avoided, and the indirect consequences.

Does asset management apply to non-industrial organisations?

Yes. Municipalities, utilities, ports, hospitals, universities and heritage bodies all hold assets whose value has to be arbitrated. The techniques change; the questions do not.

Outlook

What is ISO 55013?

Published on 3 July 2024, it provides guidance on the management of data assets. It is guidance, not a certifiable standard, do not confuse it with ISO 55001.

Is an AI model an asset?

It depreciates, it drifts, it consumes energy and water, and one day someone must decide to correct, replace or retire it. Every asset management question applies. Almost no organisation manages it that way yet.

Certify with MARAMM

Two of the questions above come up more than any other: how do I get certified, and which credential fits me. MARAMM delivers both, and they answer different needs.

ISO 55001:2024 Lead Implementer & Internal Auditor

Five intensive days on building an asset management system and auditing it, taught on the 2024 edition. Concluded by an audit simulation and a final examination, leading to the MARAMM certification. No prior experience required.

CMRP Certification Training

Four weeks online preparing for the SMRP examination across the five pillars of reliability and maintenance. Taught in English, French or Arabic. Eligibility rests on professional experience: one to five years depending on your level of education.

If your organisation is certified to ISO 55001:2014, the transition to the 2024 edition must be completed by 31 July 2027. The Lead Implementer course is built on the edition in force, which is what a transition audit will examine.
